Worst Blogger Ever!


WOW! This has been an unexpected week of craziness! I was not prepared for this!  Also, it has been so long…I’m a blogging slacker!  

I’ll start with this week and the update you on the last few months! (Yes, months (I’m hiding my head in shame!))

Calvin and I have been talking about buying a house…just talking..he needs to be slowly introduced to these ambitious thoughts of mine. He is not easily talked into change, whereas I will willingly jump into new situations.  So, while we were “talking” I convinced him to go look at a house I really liked!  I made the appointment with a friend of a friend (realtor) and asked our good friend Jay to join us (he knows lots about houses).  Off we went, thinking this was just to get an idea of what our $ could buy us.  I fell instantly in love! The house has a reading room, what was I supposed to do, act like I wasn’t impressed?  In addition to that, it has 4 bedrooms (3 for people and 1 for our bikes), a large living room with a fireplace, dinging room, and 2 full baths (with a shower I can stand up in, halleluiah!!).  Oh, and did I mention, it is on E. Washington St.?? So, needless to say I walked out ready to buy and Calvin, was well….cautious Calvin.  We set up a meeting with the loan officer (48 hours later) (another family friend) and applied for a loan. After leaving the bank we meet Julie Burk to make an offer.  One more look at the house with Mom and Dad, we were submitting that offer! We didn’t hear until the next morning if they had a counter offer.  After a few back and forth offers, we come to a compromise and now have the house of our dreams! All that in 72 hours!!

As for the rest of our life and what has been going on training wise:

I don’t really have a lot going on.  I’m maintaining my knowledge and spending a ton of time on the bike (over 700 miles this month). I’m struggling with running right now.  Not the run itself, but just being motivated to do it.  It is so cold out and I really just don’t want to go out in the morning or at night when it is dark.  I have been getting in several weekend miles but slacking on my weekday miles.  I don’t think it is going to be to bad because I have been on the bike so much, but who knows! I don’t have a race until the 1st weekend in April and my base is up to 10 miles.  So, I’m not worried, I’ll do just fine!  That being said I did take a huge step and signed up for the 1/2 Ironman in July, in Springfield! So, this summer is going to be crazy busy! I should get back in the pool one of these days!

Post race…


I’m officially in week 2 of recovery and have been slacking big time!! I have only ran 2 times.  Thank goodness Annie drug my butt out of the house and made me run 8 miles Saturday or I would feel like a total slug.  I have biked and swam…just don’t feel like putting on the winter gear to run right now!


Oh the race! I need to talk about it.  I have mixed emotions about the race.  This is why:

I felt great going into race morning.  I had the normal butterflies but I knew that I had done what I could with the time I had to be successful at reaching my goal of 4:15.  I started out feeling great. Annie and I were going to run a few miles together and then her crazy fastness was going to take off.  It turned out that our separation would happen rather quickly.  At mile one, I knew my stomach was not going to cooperate.  (If you are not a runner stop reading here, this could be a little uncomfortable)  I ran into the closest Subway (you didn’t know they sponsor me did you? Neither did they.) I was in and out in 1:10 and still had under 9:00 mile and no hope of catching up with Annie.  The next 11 miles went great! I felt great, legs were moving, the people were so supportive.   I Gu=ed a mile 7 with little more than a shudder and kept on trucking.  I was holding an nice comfy 8:45 and on pace for better than my goal.  Mile 12.5 I knew I had to use the bathroom again, so I got in line at the mile 13 portajon (safest portable bathroom made).  I kept my watch running…that was a 13 min mile (AHHHHH) darn potty.  I took off again, thought I could lighten up a little…but my body didn’t need to and held my 8:45/50 pace for another couple of miles…then my stomach again! Mile 16..18…21…you get the picture.. I was so upset! I was right on schedule and now, I was a mess!!! I finished in 4:29.  Not a bad time considering I had surgery just 8 weeks prior but I was on pace to do so much better.  Cal jumped in to help my finish out my last couple of miles and keep me focused (thank goodness!).  After 15+ min wasted using the bathroom, I had no hope for my finishing time to be where I needed it.  This is not to mention at some point during the day it started to sleet, then sprinkle then in the last mile poor.  I have no idea how much the temperature dropped but it got progressively colder as I continued!


Bright side of things: I did PR, we all did! I was able to get another marathon under my belt.  I know what I need to work on for the next one and I had a great weekend with my girls and wonderful supportive husband!

So…next race..I think I’ll test out my nutrition before I run a marathon.  Oh and I’ll not have a surgery mid training and stop running for 4 weeks…and have more then a 17 miler for my longest run.

10 years


I find myself reflecting a lot lately. Maybe this is what happens as we age….or watch our children mature. Tomorrow, Calvin and I celebrate our 10 year anniversary. And now…reflection… 10 years ago I was 19. I didn’t know what I was going to be when I grew up, where I wanted to live, or where I would get my degree. But without a doubt, I knew who would be there as I figured it all out. People talked about our marriage in hushed voices…they’re to young, that will never last, she must be pregnant. Guess what, they were all wrong!!
10 years later we are a little more grown up, but we still have a ton of fun. We have been there for each other as we made huge life changing decisions, life style changes and quarter life crisis’. I’m so happy to have such a great husband, who loves me through my craziness and brings me some calm. He really does make me want to be a better person! I love you still!! Happy Anniversary!




I have been humbled!


For the last few weeks I have been proclaiming that I am the female Lance. Being that the ovary is the female testicle and I now do not have one. Just like Lance.

I’m sure we are Facebook friends and that you read these posts for the random comic relief or to show your students all the grammar errors that adults make. I am using this soap box for something different.

I lived in Danvers for a good portion of my life and always a constant neighbor were the Kassebaums. They were the first family to use my baby sitting service (knowing my mom was a house away). I watched their little boy (Rook) who was full of life, super powers and lots of hugs. I continued to babysit for them as they welcomed an equally active little girl. I watched as Rook learned to ride a bike, swing a bat, and eventually become an incredibly successful wrestler. I helped him with his homework, and was terrified along with everyone else when he got his license. I have been lucky to watch him grow up. There was one thing that was always consistent with Rook as he grew up, it has never changed, he has the biggest heart in the world. He can make a friend out of anyone. He gives the best hugs, he puts himself last and is always concerned about everyone else’s well being.
It is understandable when I picked up the phone 2 weeks ago and received awful news that Rook, the outgoing, fun loving young man that I have watched grow up received horrid news. The same news Lance Armstrong received. Rook was diagnosed with stage 4 testicular cancer at the age of 18. My heart broke for him, his family and his friends. The doctors have moved fast and are still planning out his treatment. He will have surgery Thursday and is waiting for the next step.
I feel helpless. What can I do to help this family? How can I help the little boy who could bring a smile to anyone’s face? The Boy Scout who sold popcorn to us, even though we don’t eat it, how do I help him? The boy who would do anything for anyone. So, I’m going to do what I do best. RUN. I’m going to run for Rook. For every mile, I will run in honor of his fight, his strength, and his heart. Before I run, November 3rd I am going I raise $500 for Rook and his family, to help during this time.

This is where I ask you for a pledge, $5-$50 whatever you can afford to help this boy fight.

Oh No!!


Maybe you think I died competing my 1/2 marathon….no, if you are reading this, we talk daily and you feel obligated on two parts to read this: 1. I may publicly humiliate you with my words. 2. I may publicly humiliate you with pictures!

Well as you could guess, I did not die.  As a matter of fact, I felt very alive!  If you have not completed a 1/2 marathon before and have it on your bucket list, the Twin Cities is the one for you! It was so well run and although it was an out and back it was great!

After the race, I cleaned the house and made an awesome dinner for Cal’s Birthday!

As a matter of fact, everything is great!! I was able to get another long run in with the wolf pack this weekend, and run again on Sunday.  I also ran 3 times this week and swam!

I made it through the whole week of work without quitting to be a stay at home mom (only if the kids go to school).

I perfected the Rum Chata Martini:

I have been slacking…


but I have been crazy busy for the last few days!

So, the weekend was filled with splendor and bliss of returning to me. I added 2 more runs to my week! Tuesday, I was supposed to get up but found myself unable to crawl out of bed after a 3 hour period in the middle of the night when I could not go back to sleep. It was one of those, my brain would not stop, no matter how much I told it to!. I was worried that I was pushing my body to much, afraid that I was going to get worse and never be able to run again! Of course, none of this is true. I have been doing a great job listening to my body, resting when I need to and being active when I can. After neglecting Annie and staying in bed, I decided that I would run after I dropped Addi off at school (9:00am wish my school started at this time!). It was not an easy run. I am still concerned that I’m going to pull something internal and be found dead on the trail due to internal ovary space bleeding. I would expect the cause of death to read: Jennifer died from being a suborn ass and not resting enough! All the same…at a nice easy 9:30 pace (at times this did not feel easy…lost a little mojo) I made it down and back, what I think was 5 miles but my GPS does not like the trees on the trail (blocks its signal). After my run, I got dressed, grabbed a quick bite, ran Jori some yummy soup and funky salad from Parana (they got the order wrong, again). Then, off to the ROE to help out a bit. I was home in time to snuggle with the kids on the couch and drink my 9th cup of coffee. Needless to say the 4.5 hours of sleep I had the night before kicked my butt big time!! I was off to bed by 8, asleep by 9.

Wednesday was a whole different story! The wolf pack was reunited for the 1st time in 3 weeks!! All 3 of us ran together, chatted and watched the sun rise (over State Farm). It could not have been a more perfect run. I have no idea what pace we were @ but it was bliss! I can’t wait to do it again…on Saturday, for race day! I also got to spend my Wednesday with a few of my favorite people shopping and eating the best food ever! Quartinos….mmmmm sangria!! If ever you go to Chicago go nowhere else but here! Friend them here and get all the scoop on great wine, and food!

Yes, the race I thought I would not be able to run has become a race I will have fun at! The We Care Twin Cities 1/2 Marathon is this weekend and I can’t wait to run with Coop for the last 13.1 miles of her 20 mile day! That is pending a OK to return to running by the Doc. Lets hope he says, yes…or the 20 miles I have put in this week will be between me and you!

Awesome thing happened today!! I was asked to give some feedback on Columbia Sportswear products for runners. I’m looking for some specific changes so that I can wear more of their stuff often (because it rocks!). They have been nice enough to let me test out some products and see if they are on the right track. I can’t wait to see what they have!! My favorites from there are their Hot/Cold Gear – Totally worth every penny!

I failed…


Life as a “sick” leave mom is crazy!! Some days I’m amazed by how much I can get done while at work (pat on my back). 

Yesterday, I failed to make a pinterest anything!  This post is a fraud…but I will put up a few recipes that I have tried and loved!!!

Peach Bars –

Peachy Keen Bars Recipe

Some times recipes need a little messing with…and this one is no different.  Although the full fat version has to be fantastic, the 1/2 fat version is wonderful!  I used 8oz of non-fat Greek Yogurt in place of the cream cheese.  3 egg whites instead of 2 whole eggs.  And fresh peaches instead of canned.  My review…AMAZING! I even tested them out on my cousin and her 2 roomies @ ISU…they also loved them!  What not to try…do not substitute butter for applesauce here!! It will not work, I tried..and failed.

Lemon is my current and unbreakable favorite when it comes to sweets!! I made this recipe 100 times this summer, that could explain why I gained weight over the summer.  I will tell you I used fat free cream cheese, and I will bank on that being a good thing! I also tried it with raspberries (not so good); My recommendation: Make this, Eat the whole thing and don’t feel a bit guilty because if ever there was something to not feel guilty about, it would be this!


Alright…that will be my redemption!  And now for fun things going on in my life.

From time to time I question the amount of time I spend away from my family hitting to road on my bike or running.  Today, I have removed my guilt and embraced the amazing lesson I’m teaching my children: Exercise is a wonderful, healthy, lifestyle and they are getting to learn it first hand. 

They have no idea what it is like to live in a house where mom is home at 5am on Saturday morning and not out running. Or dad is home right after work…because he is on the bike.

They think that dates consist of riding 40-80 miles on hot days with a group of smelly, funny, spandex wearing people. 

They keep trying to convince me that we need another dog…so that I have someone to run with all the time. 

They know that cars do not just hit other cars but people on bikes as well (and give me extra hugs when I go out for a ride). 

They think that Annie and Cooper are always sweaty when they see them (because chances are, they were just running).

They think everyone should have a foam roller and know how to use it.
